Review: Everyday Heroes

Updated: Oct 9, 2023

D20 Modern was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2002 as a modern take on the D20 system that was based on 3rd edition D&D. 20 years latter Evil Genius Games has released a successor to 20 Modern, Everyday Heroes. Based in the 5e rule set Everyday Heroes brings the modern campaign to the tabletop in a tour de force.

Mycelia game in progress

Everyday Heroes is built on 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons rules. Everyday Heroes keeps things streamlined by having easy to understand archetypes and classes. The levels in Everyday Heroes go from level 1 through 10. Rather than armor class its been replaced with defense that's calculated using a hero's primary ability. Everyday Heroes has a focus on feats and uses it a core part of the game. Feats are also used in the multi classing.

this book comes with an awesome index that will get you to where you need to be.

Characters are broken down into archetype and class. In the main rule book there are six hero archetypes that match up fairly well to the 6 abilities that each character is built on. Each of the archetypes have 3-4 classes associated with them. To finish the details on characters the book has a lot of backgrounds and professions to add to your character.

After you advance your character to levels 2,4,6,8, and 10 you get to add a feat to your character. Feats are a core part of Everyday Heroes. There are basic, advanced and multi-class feats that will advance your character. Heroes may take basic feats multiple times but advanced and multi-class feats only one time. There are lots a really fun things in the feats section. There are a lot of feats to choose from giving player a lot of paths to grow.

If you are a new player or new game master then this book should be in your collection.

Modern times bring modern things that need rules. Everyday Heroes has you covered there. There are a lot of rules covering modern weapons and vehicles. Supersonic Planes to Sailboats and Sniper rifles to chainsaws its all in there for you to explore. There are tons of examples in the book of characters and creatures. If you are a new player or new game master then this book should be in your collection. There are a lot of pages devoted to how to run a campaign and the words are not necessarily specific to Everyday Heroes. I recommend reading this book even for the experienced game master. There is a lot of great information and strategies that can be used across the gambit of TTRPGs. Most importantly this book comes with an awesome index that will get you to where you need to be.

Luddite Box Cover
