Upper Deck Sues Ravensburger

June 7th 2023 Upper Deck filed a law suit against Ravensburger alleging that the upcoming Disney themed game Lorcana was stolen from them. Lorcana was announced fall 2022 at Disney's convention. Said to be the next big competitor to Magic and Yu-Gi-Oh, Lorcana is also a collectable card game.

“We invested significant time and resources to develop a new and novel trading card game. Our current leadership values the importance of protecting intellectual property of both Upper Deck and its licensors,” said Upper Deck President Jason Masherah.

Lorcana co-designer Ryan Miller developed a game called Rush of Ikorr while working for Upper Deck that is "nearly Identical" to Lorcana. The announcement last fall said the release date would be fall 2023 but with this lawsuit we will see if that gets pushed or scrapped. Game mechanisms cannot be copy written however this is seemingly different as it is alleged that the game was copied in its entirety and re-themed before it was published.
